Suffering with cankles?
For Maternity
Maternity
Everyone recognises the characteristic physical changes that occur in the three trimesters of pregnancy, in addition there are huge physiological changes that occur to cope with the demands of pregnancy.
Oedema in Pregnancy - What causes it?
One of the most common complaints of advancing pregnancy is oedema - which is excess fluid collecting in the peripheries especially the legs, causing swollen and uncomfortable hands and feet (widely referred to as cankles). This occurs for a variety of factors, which include;
- Increased blood volume
- Pressure on the Vena Cava from the foetus in the abdomen. This is the large vein which drains blood from your legs back to your heart
- Biochemical changes and changes in the blood flow to the kidney, which are crucial in maintaining normal fluid balance

How to improve symptoms
As oedema is a normal part of pregnancy it is not possible to 'cure' it. Most solutions suggest specific modification to behaviour such as, sitting with your feet up, regular short walks and lying on your left side to ease pressure on the Vena Cava.
GC Tech™ – the solution
At Evexar we realise that it is not often possible to modify your lifestyle, even when pregnant. Our GC Tech™ socks have been specifically designed to reduce swelling in the lower leg. The advantage to other solutions is that as socks they can be worn all day and without any other effort they will reduce swelling and directly relieve symptoms.
DVT
In the developed world Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolisms are the most common causes of death during pregnancy. In fact the chances of getting a DVT are five times higher in pregnant females versus non-pregnant females of the same age group. There are many causes of this and risk increases with number of pregnancies, weight, caesarean section, previous DVT's or clotting abnormalities.
Compression socks and DVT
Compression socks are now standard devices used in the NHS to prevent blood clots. Due to the way they squeeze your lower leg they increase blood flow in the deep vein, reducing the risk of a blood clot and preventing venous pooling. The key fact to remember is that the sock must be correctly sized, worn without creases/rolled down and be medical grade class 1 graduated compression.
Evexar Medical in conjunction with vascular surgeons at UCL have designed a comfortable Class 1 CE marked graduated sock that can be worn daily during pregnancy which will significantly help reduce the risk of a DVT.
Why GC Tech™ Socks in pregnancy?
The issues that ECAL's socks can directly address;
- DVT
- Varicose Veins
- Lower Limb Oedema
- Medically proven, class 1 CE marked graduated compression.
The issue with hospital based compression socks are they are often uncomfortable, itchy and make your legs feel hot and sweaty. ECAL has taken this core hospital technology and improved it for daily use. Our socks have been designed using the latest fabric technology, wicking agent and antibacterials to ensure comfort and high-grade quality, so that they can be worn as replacements for your normal socks.
Compared to over the counter support tights, our socks are 'medical grade' this means they have been medical proven and tested to help with the specific issue discussed above.
